Summer Tuna Fishing in Louisiana

Yellowfin tuna are migratory fish found in the gulf waters and can be caught year-round off the coast of Louisiana. The average yellowfin tuna weighs between 50 and 150 pounds, with the larger ones weighing as much as 200 pounds. As we are now well into the summer months, it’s a great time to fish for yellowfin tuna, with the warm waters moving the fish  throughout the waters along Louisiana's coast.

Changes in Recreational Fishing for Yellowfin Tuna
Last year, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries approved a notice of intent, creating a free permit for recreational anglers fishing for yellowfin tuna. The goal of this free permit is to be able to collect data about the people fishing for yellowfin tuna, as well as to determine how much tuna is harvested off the Louisiana coast. The LDWF hopes that with this information coming in, they will be better able to understand the resources along the coast, how to better enjoy them and what types of fishing experiences anglers can expect. Since the permit is free, it’s designed to be hassle-free, allowing for input- Anglers can report their trips and what was caught.

Tuna Fishing Charters
One of the most most enjoyable ways to go tuna fishing is by taking a charter boat. Charter boats take you deep into the waters, to the best spots for catching tuna and other offshore fish. Even though Louisiana as a whole is known for its prolific fishing waters, there are some ports that are more lucrative in tuna than others. For example, the small port of Venice, located in Plaquemines Parish, is an excellent place to fish for tuna. Take a charter boat or fish off one of the several marinas and lodges that have been established along the major highway. If you choose to take a charter boat, keep in mind that you’ll have top quality boats in tow, with the best equipment and access to first-class lodging.

Tips for Fishing for Tuna
Yellowfin tuna, being strong and fast swimmers, make for a challenging (some would say "back-breaking" fishing experience!  They can be caught throughout the year in Louisiana waters. During the summer months, yellowfin can be found in plentiful numbers throughout the Gulf waters, including near rigs (oil platforms) and where the blue water meets the green (the "rip"). They can also be found near floating rigs or around salt domes (or "lumps" as the locals call them), such as the famous Midnight Lump, located 50 miles off the coast of Venice.  Tuna will bite on  a variety of bait fish, including sardines, hard tails (blue runners) and mullets. Depending on the size of tuna being fished, light tackle to heavy tackle can be employed.

The month of July is a great time to book your tuna fishing adventure and experience the exciting journey these fish will take you on.
