A Louisiana saltwater fishing guide

Whether you are a Louisiana native or a visitor to our great state, we promise you won’t find better saltwater fishing anywhere in America. While many places make this type of claim, Louisiana backs it up! Just take a look at the marina docks on just about any afternoon next time you are around to see the proof. The great thing which separates Louisiana from many other saltwater fishing destinations is choice. You have so many choices that sometimes it is difficult to decide on just the way to go on any single day. You can fish all along the Louisiana coast and even further offshore. You can pick your favorite spots or try something new. You can try for your favorite fish species or go for a new experience. You can fish alone or with a guide. You can fish winter, spring, summer and fall.

Louisiana Fishing Resources

Shallow or Deep Water Fish

The type of fish you will catch depends on where you fish. If you fish in shallow water, you’ll find:

  • Speckled trout
  • Redfish
  • Flounder, croakers, drum and more

Go out in deeper water and you are going to find:

  • Red snapper
  • Grouper
  • Wahoo
  • King Mackerel
  • Tuna and many, many more

Just take your pick of where to go and you’ll find all the fish you could want.

Where to Go

There are great fishing spots all along the coast. Some of the best include:

  • In and around Lake Pontchartrain near St. Tammany
  • Plaquemine’s Parish at the tip of the Mississippi River
  • Cocodrie – located near Houma
  • The Calcasieu Estuary near Lake Charles
  • Delacroix (St. Bernard)
  • Grand Isle or Lafitte (Jefferson)
  • Port Fourchon (Lafourche)
  • Morgan City or Franklin (St. Mary)
  • Pecan Island & Avery Island (Iberia and Vermilion)

The list of great fishing spots could take up a large article in your favorite fishing magazine.

When to Fish

With Louisiana’s temperate climate, most of the time, you can fish any time during the year. What you do to prepare and where you will find the fish depends on the temperature, winds, and more. A lot of fishermen shy away from winter fishing, but not in Louisiana. Just make sure you take your normal boating precautions and get educated on a few winter fishing techniques. You can find these online, but practice makes perfect.

Options to Fish On Your Own or With a Guide

You can go out on your own, but it is best to fish with a buddy.  Or, if you want a near guarantee to catch fish, you can use a guide. If you are on your own, make sure you are very well prepared in safety, tackle, boating and more. Again, if you are unsure, find advice online and make a list that you check off religiously. If you want a great fishing day and a learning experience, just use one of the many fine fishing guides you’ll find in Louisiana.
